I believe that one of the reasons why God called David a man after His heart was because of the way David treated his enemies especially those that wanted him dead.
Saul did all he could to destroy David, several times David had great opportunities to kill Saul but he spared him, in fact he wept and repented for just cutting off the tip of Saul's garment. The death of Saul was not an answered prayer to David, it wasn't the time to rejoice over the death of his enemy, but David mourned, raised a lamentation over Saul's death, he said, "The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen! Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph. Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil". Then the man that claimed to have killed Saul was not spared. Saul was supposed to be his enemy for life.
David genuinely mourned the assassination of Abner, the commander of Saul's army, and those that killed Ishbosheth, Saul's first son who had already made himself king, were as well killed by David.
How do you react when the name of the person you had issues with is mentioned, what comes to your mind when you hear that the guy that jilted you is having problems with his marriage, how about hearing that your rival is sick, or that one terrible thing has happened to the person that swore to destroy you... Go for thanksgiving? Excited? Spread the news? Mock the person? As if you haven't stepped on toes.
Let God be the judge, He sure looks at heart....
